Cleft Lip or Palate

A cleft occurs when parts of the lip or palate do not completely fuse together during the first 3 months of pregnancy. A cleft lip may appear as only a small notch in the edge of the lip. In more extreme cases, it may extend into the gums and nose.

When possible, cleft lips are repaired between 3 to 6 months years of age. Depending on the severity, other procedures may need to precede the surgery, such as lip adhesion or a molding plate to bring the parts together. Cleft lip repair is done in a hospital under general anesthesia.

In the case of a cleft palate, surgical corrections are generally made between 9 to 12 months of age. Repairing the palate includes reconstructing the sides of the palate so they connecting to each other and creating a normal barrier between the two. This surgery usually requires an overnight stay at the hospital and general anesthesia. The goal is to create a palate that aids in normal speech development.

Surgery: Inpatient, 2 to 6 hours

Recovery: Activity will be limited for several weeks. Dietary restrictions per surgeon’s orders.

Cost: Minimum $5,000 but often more surgeries or other care is necessary.
